It was an electric event March 21st as the 2010 NIPA winners were announced at the conclusion of the spring convention. Congratulations to all of the winners. It’s great when you can be rewarded for your hard work and dedication to publications. Here are the results:

The Journalist-in-Action schedule is set. We have a wide range of topics for students to cover as they compete against students from across the region. Follow these steps to get your students signed up for the best journalism competition in the region:

1. Review the schedule and instructions
2. Fill out this SIGN UP form and return to jpmurphy@west-fargo.k12.nd.us by Thursday, March 11th.
3. Fill out the payment form and mail to Jeremy Murphy at the UND School of Communication, PO Box 7169, Grand Forks, ND 58202 by Thursday, March 11
2. If you have students completing the editorial, have them review the instructions and turn in their entry by Monday, March 15th.

There are several opportunities for NIPA schools to showcase their work from the 2009-2010 school year. Schools can apply for awards that promote their community involvement, adviser’s work or individual accomplishments. Below is a list of NIPA awards available.

As the spring convention nears, staffs are quickly putting together their best material of the year in order to compete in the 2010 mail-in competition. Professional judges from around the region are ready to judge your work. Click here to see the categories for 2010.

Also, don’t forget the instructions and submission form for your 2010 entries. Good luck to all journalists competing.

For overall categories, check out these packets for judging criteria for yearbook and newspaper. ALL OVERALL CATEGORY ENTRANTS will also need this informational form to submit with their entries.

NIPA WINNERS 2009

Judges from all around the country provided feedback and ranked the best NIPA entries in a variety of categories. Many judges were impressed with the quality of student journalism being produced in the region.

Mail-In Rubrics

These rubrics are used as guides when judging entries and provides feedback to contestant. This form is limited in its ability to effectively rank entries, but it helps judges to note special creative elements that might push an entry over another. A high score does not necessarily mean a high finish in the category. It also provides a great opportunity for judges to provide comments that can help publication staffs improve their publications.

Becoming a member of the Northern Interscholastic Press Association is simple and the benefits are everlasting. Members of NIPA are provided with the best opportunities to improve their scholastic journalism programs.

Through conventions in the fall and spring, students get hands-on experience in the field of journalism. They learn from professionals as well as their peers from around the region.

Students also get feedback on competition pieces from nationally-renowned judges around the country. They can apply this information to help improve their publications and become more competitive journalists in an increasingly competitive field.

To become a member of NIPA, simply fill out this form and send it to the UND School of Communication anytime during the academic year.

The categories for Journalist-in-Action are being prepared for the intense April NIPA competition. Students from around the region compete in specific breakout sessions to test their journalistic skills in real-world settings.

The spring convention at UND is quickly approaching. The conference and competition, scheduled for April 4th and 5th, will bring schools together from around the region to showcase their journalistic skills in real-world settings. Beyond the Journalist-in-Action competition, we also will award winners of our competitive, mail-in categories. These categories are judged by the highest quality judges from around the nation. They provide important feedback for students to further the quality of their publications.

To compete in the mail-in competition, just tape a copy of this entry form to the back of each entry. The easiest way to do this is to write all of your school information and make a photocopy of the form before cutting on the dotted line. Make sure to follow the instructions before mailing your entries.
